My Thoughts About Abortion

This is a tough subject to discuss and I know many of you will argue the point and it's okay. I want you to think about why you believe as you do. I was accused of supporting Abortion because I voted Democrat this election and it has caused me to ponder about my thoughts on Abortion. I have strong convictions about many things but this subject allowed me to dig deeper.

As a Christian, I always return to my main source of research, The Bible. I was reminded of the God of the Old Testament who has never shirked from killing off large numbers of men, women, and children for reasons we should consider and research for yourself. Below is just one of the times God allowed the destruction of life.

Deut. 3:1-7 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 2 And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon. 3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining. 4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many. 6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

There are a lot of misconceptions about why God would destroy the world or cities with children that are still living in them, but let's look at some scenarios about why God not only destroyed cities, but he destroyed all the earth and those in it.

Gen: 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence all through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Did Noah take any children on his boat, besides his own family? He did not. Therefore, all other children and individuals were destroyed. I could quote science and history of this event and other sources but it would make for a long document and it’s more important you do your own research.

The other well-known destruction of cities were those of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Bible tells us that the reason for such destruction was because of sin, beyond repair, as was the days of Noah. They call it “societal reprobation.” Reprobation is a term used in the Bible to describe an individual who is irretrievably evil. It describes an individual whose every thought and action is evil all the time. Such individuals believe that what normal human beings consider as evil acts, they justify as good. Their intentions are evil, and they work tirelessly to morally corrupt others; to persuade, and if possible force, others to join them in their evil thinking and behavior. They tormented and distressed Lot who was the only righteous man left in the city of Sodom, ((Peter 2:7).

Whenever sin goes beyond reach, no repentance insight, God removes the sinners before it affects the souls of all. The history of Sodom mentions violent acts of sin such as rape and haughtiness, egoism, sexual sins with animals and with children. It was also believed that this was a drug-trafficking for opium, referred to in the Bible as “wormwood.” Yes, we have these types of places today, BUT, if there is but one righteous among them, these places are spared. (For now). Once the inhabitants of a city becomes completely reprobate there is no hope for the children born within that city. Why do you think that is?

Romans 1:32 tells us that reprobation is malignant. No cure, no hope. It spreads like a cancer or (covid-19), and all the individuals and the children that are exposed to it, would be infected being completely overtaken by its effects. To prevent further spreading, God surgically removes the cancer from society, (metaphorically speaking). If God had Not acted as he did, the disease would have inevitably spread to other parts of the world. Just take a look at certain cities of high crime throughout our lifetime. Can you see just how quickly this spreads and how it affects the surrounding cities? If no-one takes the lead to fight the crime because of fear or intimidation, the crime would just spread.

Back in 1983, I volunteered at a Christian pro-life facility in Florida, as part of my internship from college. That experience opened my eyes to some reality, making it difficult to talk some women out of an abortion. Its much easier to judge others based solely on my beliefs, but when confronted with a different perspective, I learned to listen more and talk less. Each case was uniquely different and many stories were heart-wrenching. I learned a lot about the women who were seeking to have an abortion, some professing to be Christian.

These women were human, like you and me. Many of them from broken homes but not all. Some of them had been raped by a stranger, some had been sexually abused by their significant other, a friend of the family or by a family member. There were a few Christian women who had been so severely beaten because they were not submissive enough to their husbands. They feared the safety of the child they carried and did not want to bring a child into their world. They felt guilty and ashamed for thinking that way but their intent was to save another child from a life of abuse. I believe God was doing the same thing when he destroyed the world of sin and corruption. It was an act of mercy, not being controlling and barbaric as some might believe.

I met one Christian couple who came into our office with their 10-year-old pregnant daughter. They demanded an abortion ASAP before their daughter started to show and to avoid being “an embarrassment to this family.” They accused her of being a whore, yet when we counseled further I would discover that their daughter had not been taught about sex, or birth control, or about relationships with boys. I guess it was assumed she would learn it on her own, which she did. Back in the ’80s, we did not have as many adoption agencies or homes for unwed mothers as we have now, although funding has been difficult for many and most of them are filled to the brim.

In 2015, I worked at Cornell Abraxas girls’ home as a therapist. I saw the heart-wrenching results of abandoned girls that were dropped off with one Box of personal items, (that was all allowable), their parents were in the office signing their parental rights over to the state. Some of these girls were told this was a temporary situation when in fact it was a life sentence. The therapist had the responsibility of having to tell them the truth. This kind of emotional scarring takes a long time to heal.

Today, we can read headlines or hear on the news, about a child that has been killed by a parent either by drowning or by a gun, long-term neglect and abuse, or babies found in dumpsters. The foster care system does not have enough homes to house any more abandoned children in our system. The last I checked there were over 800,000 children in the foster care system that needed homes and many of those are seeking adoption.

What about all the cruel acts that are put upon the children today that being trafficked for sex or growing up in a home of violence, poverty, and with parents who just don't know how to parent. what happens to these kids? Would it had been better for them if God took them home early instead of allowing them to suffer?

I'm not saying that abortion is the answer and nor do I support it but if we were to take it away all together I believe we'd end up with more abused, neglected, and abandoned children who may or may not end up an addict or a criminal or just plain homeless. The help they need from counselors is limited as our mental health system is overloaded. This puts a great burden on society and the government. I truly believe that God was being merciful by taking his children home for recovery until the day he could send his son to deliver us. Just go online and join a few discussion groups (as I have), and just listen to their stories. Listen to how much pain they carry from the years of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

If we could remember that our spirit is not as the flesh. When a baby dies, it's only the body that is left behind, but the spirit is in a far better place than they are here if all they are going to get is abuse and pain.

I don't know what the answer is and again I don't approve of how abortion has extended to the point of full term. I do think it's wrong and there are many people who would love to adopt those babies. Like many things that were to serve a purpose of good end up being used for evil when put in the wrong hands. Look how the internet has changed, we have pedophiles, serial killers, manipulators, hackers, and others who want to take advantage of those that are vulnerable and innocent. We don't live in a perfect world and I am thankful for those who hear the voice of their God and do all they can to serve those in need. We're all here for a purpose, to grow and expand our knowledge and understanding so that we can be helpful to others and forgiving without judgment. This comes through experience, listening, and learning from the perspective of others.

Please share your thoughts about this matter, as I learn from you as you say you learn from me.

Be blessed everyone.
